pool of In 2018, 63.24% of all candidate attorney appointments in the
young black Group were black candidate attorneys, with 38.24% being black
and female females and an overall percentage of 60.3% being female
candidate appointments. In 2019, the picture was very similar with 63.64%
attorneys at of all appointments made being black candidate attorneys, with
member firms 41.82% being black females and an overall percentage of 61.82%
being female appointments. These strong percentages show that
the processes put in place for the recruitment of graduates are
working and producing a growing pool of young black and female
candidate attorneys at member firms.
When looking at the provincial appointment statistics of member
firms it is still apparent (although steadily reducing) that provinces
with more rural firms i.e. firms further away from main centres
and universities, are still at a disadvantage when recruiting black
candidates as compared to provinces with more urban firms or
firms in larger centres. Gauteng and Western Cape are good
examples here, leading with an average of approximately 70%
black candidate attorney appointments, which evidences the
greater ability of these firms to attract candidates.
